President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) could be expected to make major layoffs.

Trump told reporters at the first presidential cabinet meeting in his second term that EPA administrator Lee Zeldin could cut 65% of the agency's workforce. The Trump administration has begun firing federal workers to reduce government bureaucracy and reduce waste in federal spending.

“I talked to Lee Zeldin and he thinks he will cut people in the environment around 65%, and we will speed up the process at the same time,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “He has a lot of people who don't have jobs, just hinderers, and a lot of people don't exist.”

The Trump administration established the Department of Administration Efficiency (DOGE) on January 20 to eliminate wasteful spending from the federal government. The department claims to have identified $65 billion in wasted or even fraudulent spending. (Related: Biden EPA has proven to have selected senior directors of multibillion-dollar organizations as big donors to the Democratic Party)

Zeldin recently highlighted the most shocking mismanagement of EPA taxpayer funds, noting that billions of dollars were allegedly sent to left-wing nonprofits, and some even related to democratic voter mobilization efforts under the previous president’s administration.

“President Trump, the Governor and President Selding are committed to reducing waste, fraud and abuse in all institutions,” White House spokesman Taylor Rogers told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“After recently identified $20 billion in fraudulent spending, Selding administrators are committed to eliminating 65% of EPA waste.”
