Heat Wave #3
Don't expect this heat wave to end anytime soon. Today is day 19. One day of 98 or 99 degrees doesn't end a heat wave, it just prolongs it. Temperatures may approach 90 degrees on Thursday, but I don't expect the third heat wave to be over.
#3 The heat wave has lasted 17 triple-digit days (as of this article), 11 heat stress days, 8 morning lows of 80 degrees or higher, plus 8 days with temperatures of 109 degrees or higher. This puts us in a Category 5 heat wave. The last time it reached such heights was in 1933. That exceeds the peak of the 2005 heat wave, which peaked at 107 degrees. The third heat wave began on June 28. It is expected to remain in triple digits for the next fifteen days. AKA…August!
Too much heat return
The heat warnings we have had in place for the past two weeks come to an end on Sunday. However, more high temperatures are expected to return next Sunday and continue into next week. Highs are again expected to be 107-114 degrees. Please respect the heat. Stay in the shade. Stay hydrated. Wear light and light-colored clothing.
smoky sky
Several wildfires in and around Kern County will make our skylines very hazy. The Lost Mountain Fire near Lost Mountain will affect the area from Taft to Bakersfield. The White Fire, an hour's drive south of Tehachapi in Twin Lakes, is expected to have the greatest impact on the area. It affects mountainous and desert areas of Kern County. Finally, the Laura Fire in the Kern Valley impacted the Porterville area. Air quality will be in the poor to poor range through Wednesday.
