Damaging winds hit Chicago
A deadly derecho struck the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region Monday night, packing wind gusts of 100 mph and multiple tornadoes, sending tornado warnings sounding in Chicago for the second night in a row and causing damage in five states. .
Bad weather turns to Northeast and plains
After a stormy night in the Midwest, the threat of severe weather has shifted to the Northeast, where severe storms could cause damaging winds and flooding. A series of storms is expected to develop from eastern Ohio to New Hampshire in the afternoon and evening.
In the plains, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon, with the biggest threats being large hail and damaging winds.
More than 100 million Americans are under heat alert
Nearly half of the United States is under heat alert as an intense heat wave continues to bake much of the country. Heat watches have been activated in cities including Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and New York, where temperatures could feel like 110 degrees by Tuesday.
