Matt Keane asks clean energy industry to speak out against vested interests 'undermining transformation'
Former NSW Liberal minister calls on the renewable energy industry to “spend its money where it should” in his maiden speech as incoming Climate Change Authority chief

Incoming Climate Change Authority chairman Matt Keane has called on the clean energy industry to “enter the stage” and resist attempts by vested interests to undermine public confidence in renewable energy.
Keane, a former New South Wales energy minister and Liberal MP, told the 2024 Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney that the industry had the scientific and financial muscle to counter the “propaganda” of vested fossil fuel interests.
“Those who seek to maintain the status quo and pursue their own excess profits and self-interest at the expense of Australian families and the country are working to undermine the transition,” Keane said in his first major speech since being appointed as the authority, led last month by the Albanian government. lead.

“While many here are silent and hopeful, they are loud and determined,” Keane said, according to a copy of the speech. “Now is the time for many of you in this room to put your money where your mouth is.”
“The facts, benefits and positive outcomes are on your side,” he said. “Now is the time for you to join the debate and defend Australia.”
…
“Too many projects are forced to follow a winding path to approval, bouncing back and forth between federal, state, and sometimes local approval systems… dragging on for years when time is of the essence,“Keane said.

Someone should explain “social license” to new Climate Change Authority chairman Matt Keane.
Excerpted from AEMO Appendix “2024 National Electricity Market Comprehensive System Plan”
… As part of this infrastructure development, the energy industry needs to establish and maintain social license in local communities that are required to host new generations, storage and transmission.
Building social license for infrastructure development requires intentional and ongoing relationship building between organizations and communities to promote acceptance and trust. Communities also have their own inherent social license 'commitments' to each other (e.g. farmers' rights to farm, rural communities' rights to function harmoniously, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights to practice their culture) which must be considered. Community acceptance of projects increases when organizations prioritize trust and create an overall positive impact, and projects are awarded or withdrawn by the community based on their social, cultural, and economic conditions…

AEMO does a good job of explaining what social license is, but maybe they should put more effort into explaining why social license is so important.
Social license is important because it is the only way to prevent metal thieves from destroying Australia's electricity infrastructure like they did in South Africa, because rural Australians have enough sense of community to pick up the phone and call the police when they see metal thieves attacking. tower.
No affordable patrol or security system can keep hundreds of miles of power lines and other sensitive energy infrastructure safe from thieves without the full cooperation of local people.
Rural Australia could switch from calling the police to serving coffee and refreshments to metal thieves at work if Matt Kean rams through his fast-track planning approval despite local opposition.
But I doubt Matt Keane would listen to anyone offering such advice. Keane appears to be the kind of climate change authority destined to learn the hard way.
Councilor Keith Pitt's response to Matt Keane's speech: “Matt Keane is the problem, not the solution”.
WUWT does not advocate for metal theft or illegality, and our preferred solution to such an impasse is to promote public support for scrapping all net zero and climate policies and abolishing all climate change ministries, departments and agencies.
