There are many stories about how climate change and extreme weather intersect, and how humans respond to this mix. At Yale Climate Connection, we have been working on this work for years, including through our Eye of the Storm unit (EOTS), led by longtime meteorologists and weather/climate writers Dr. Jeff Masters and Bob Hansen. We know that not all readers will read all 151 EOTS posts we have published since January 1 of this year. To make things easier, we've highlighted some of our favorites below. Many of them are written by Jeff and Bob, while others are written by…

America needs a subzero blackout prevention plan — does Watts have anything to say about it?
from CFACT David Wojik The cold kills, and the U.S. faces a huge risk of deadly sub-zero blackouts. Renewable energy is part of the problem, but natural gas is the biggest part. We now know that the supply systems that power gas-fired power plants can be unreliable during extreme cold weather. The switch from coal to natural gas leaves us vulnerable to cold weather power outages. We need a program to address and fix this vulnerability. Action is needed at both the state and federal levels. New coal-fired power generation may be part of the answer. Vulnerability to extreme cold…
Transcript: In supermarkets, refrigerators, freezers and coolers are connected by miles of pipes to help keep food fresh. Skilled technicians ensure the smooth functioning of these systems. These workers can play a key role in helping supermarkets reduce their impact on the climate. Vanzo: “Cooling has been recognized as one of the major global opportunities to combat climate change and reduce emissions.” Most refrigerators and freezers use refrigerants called hydrofluorocarbons, said Morgan Vanzo of the North American Council for Sustainable Freezing. They are potent global warming gases. There are alternatives to HFCs that are better for the climate. But she…
From the Daily Skeptic Chris Morrison The Green Group’s dark financial tentacles help orchestrate mainstream media, brainwash young children, fund widespread climate pseudoscience, initiate and fund legal action, and fund countless “grassroots” advocacy efforts. But political influence is highly valued, making local government representatives and mayors top targets. Alas, these individuals come and go according to the whims of local voters. But this is not the case for the unelected members of Britain's House of Lords, who have considerable power to amend legislative proposals put forward by the elected House of Commons. Given the potential for net zero harm to…
President Joe Biden’s administration has announced ambitious new climate goals under the Paris Agreement, a development that feels less like real policy and more like desperate virtue signaling. According to Reuters, the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 61% to 66% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels – a lofty goal announced just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump returns to the Oval Office , and pledged to undo much of Biden's climate agenda. The government has promoted the move as “durable” and “achievable,” with officials touting the alleged permanence of measures contained in the Inflation Reduction Act and…
Guest post by S. Stanley Young and Warren Kindzierski The Heritage Foundation asked us to write two papers on the alleged link between climate change, projected changes in air quality, and public health impacts. Both papers can be found on their website. A paper discusses Climate change-fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-public health connection (or lack thereof). The second paper discusses how ozone adapts (or rather how it does not adapt) to the climate change-ozone-asthma connection. Abstracts from both papers are provided below, and an open question is posed to WUWT readers. First and foremost…for PM2.5 and ozone, none of the studies…
On December 18, 2024, the Montana Supreme Court issued what climate activists hailed as a landmark decision in Held v. Montana. Sixteen young plaintiffs, backed by the wealthy advocacy group Our Children's Trust, told the court that state support for fossil fuel programs violated their constitutional right to a “clean and healthy environment.” The court voted 6 to 1 that this constitutional right extended to “a stable climate system.” For those of us in the climate realist camp, this decision is not only disappointing, but a blow to rational decision-making and fundamental principles of American governance. Let's explore why. At…
A Montreal-based company operating north of Calgary, Alta., just received $40 million in funding from a company with ties to Bill Gates. [emphasis, links added] According to reports, Canadian startup Deep Sky has received funding from venture capital firm Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to build its Deep Sky Alpha project – the world's first direct air capture carbon removal project. canadian news agency. Once completed, the project will remove excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to combat “climate change” – unlike carbon capture and storage, which captures CO2 from smokestacks. December 7, 2023 Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her cabinet…
Article by Eric Worrell A new twist in the politics of genetically modified food in Europe? Climate change-fighting baked goods save Christmas dinner Date Wednesday 24th December 18th Scientists have saved the future of Christmas dinner by creating a climate-proof baked potato. A team from the University of Illinois and the University of Essex has developed a potato that can withstand heat waves. Plants engineered to grow under extreme stress in the field increased potato yields by 30%, a landmark achievement. It is hoped this will help families who rely on staple crops and safeguard their future in a changing…
