Article by Eric Worrell Mike Gallagher, CEO of Ports Australia – “You can't get them out. So if you can't put them out, you can imagine them on the streets, you can imagine them on ships at sea or in ports. Warning for e-scooter and bike batteries in everyday fires By: 9 News Staff September 22, 2024 8:24 pm … Firefighters have noticed a series of explosions caused by lithium batteries in e-scooters and e-bikes, which can occur even as they are being transported to stores. “The fires we see almost every day are caused by small e-scooter, e-bike type…
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday enacted a law banning most plastic bags at grocery store checkouts. [emphasis, links added] SB 1053, which would take effect in early 2026, would ban stores from providing single-use plastic bags to customers at the point of sale. The legislation is California’s second attempt to crack down on single-use plastic bags in the state and includes a number of exemptions, including for bags used to carry unpackaged food. “I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for signing this important legislation that will help protect California’s environment,” California Democratic Senator Katherine Blackspear, who sponsored the bill,…
Automakers continued to push back electric vehicle (EV) targets last year as weak consumer demand hampered growth despite billions of dollars in subsidies from the Biden-Harris administration to the industry. [emphasis, links added] Since February, many automakers have abandoned key electric vehicle targets, with Volvo, Ford and Mercedes-Benz all cutting electric quotas or abandoning previously planned product lines. The shift in corporate strategy suggests the transition to electric vehicles — once touted by auto executives such as Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley as the future of the industry — may not be as feasible as once thought as consumers abhor…
Who cares if it works? This is how the green racket usually works: Come up with some pie-in-the-sky project for green energy production, no matter how unfeasible it is, propose it to technically ignorant bureaucrats – who have no problem allowing and funding it – to build it It, and, after realizing it will never work, abandon it and let the next generation deal with the mess. [emphasis, links added] At the same time, you will make a decent amount of money. The latest possible example of such a project is “Axpo in Glarus Süd”, described by Blackout News: “The…
time The magazine recently published an article titled “Is climate change causing deadly floods in Europe?” While providing some balance, it is asserted that recent flooding in Poland and other parts of Europe reflects broader patterns of deterioration caused by climate change. [emphasis, links added] This is wrong. There is nothing in the data to suggest a “pattern” of increasing flood severity or incidence. time Acknowledging that “it is difficult to draw conclusive links between this event and climate change”, but then saying: “Experts say the worst floods to hit the region in at least two decades fit within a…
Taken from Bank of England report Terry Ettam I'm not sure about you, but the last thing I want to talk about is the election. When I think about how much precious time I've wasted listening to politics in the last year, I want to puke. There are no longer voices of pollsters, commentators or statisticians. Well, maybe I want to talk about the statistician, like there's an old joke about the statistician, the guy who drowned because he waded in a river that was only three feet deep on average. Look, isn’t this already better than politics? However, while…
In April 2024, more than 9 million residents of Colombia's capital, Bogota, were told to collect rainwater – if the city was lucky enough to experience a storm. The Chingaza reservoir system, fed by the Guatiquía River, provides 70% of the region's water, but water levels have reached extremely low levels. To get what's left through a drought with no end in sight, authorities have divided the city into nine zones. Each day, one of the areas will dry for 24 hours. None of the toilets flushed. There was not a glass of water to pour from the tap. Dishes…
Meet Scott Sklar, a renewable energy enthusiast from Arlington, Virginia » Yale Climate Connection
When the power goes out in Arlington, Virginia, people often gather at Scott Sklar's home. Sklar: “I've taken pictures of 30 cellphones charging on the dining room table, 18 bags of medicine in the refrigerator, and my neighbors sitting in my house on a very hot or cold night.” That's because Sklar's home and separate office never lose power. He uses a combination of technologies to produce clean energy – solar panels, solar roof panels, wind turbines and hydrogen fuel cells. He stores excess electricity in a set of batteries. Sklar has been a renewable energy enthusiast since the 1970s…
Why will there never be a zero-emission electricity system powered primarily by wind and solar – watts and above?
From Manhattan Contrarians Francis Menton “Net Zero” – this is a two-word slogan that has become the official goal of every ethical country or nation to decarbonize its energy system. The “net” part is an indirect recognition that some parts of the energy system (such as air travel or steelmaking) may never be fully decarbonized. Therefore, it may be necessary to accept some kind of compensation or indulgence before you can claim to have achieved your goals. But the “net” stuff doesn’t lend itself to the simple parts of decarbonization. By the simple part I mean generating electricity and powering…
