The New Jersey forecast calls for two more days of thunderstorms and showers before clearing out and dry, sunny weather heading into the weekend.
Although there are no storm watches or warnings in effect, forecasters say there is a good chance of precipitation. Showers are possible later this morning, particularly over coastal areas, before heavier, more steady rainfall is possible this afternoon and evening, accompanied by thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service said in a morning forecast that heavy rain is most likely south and east of Interstate 95, where localized flooding is also possible.
Otherwise, expect mainly cloudy weather with highs reaching 80 degrees.
According to the weather service, there is a 50% chance of precipitation in Hackettstown, a 65% chance of precipitation in Trenton and Atlantic City, and a 70% chance of precipitation in Toms River.
Overnight lows are in the 60s and 70s.
The forecast for Thursday is similar, with light rain possible in the morning and severe thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening. The weather service predicts a 45% to 55% chance of rain during the day in the northern half of the state and a 55%-65% chance of rain in the southern half of New Jersey.
At night, these percentages drop to around 30% or lower. Normal summer high temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s, followed by nighttime temperatures dropping into the low 60s to low 70s.
AccuWeather.com predicts the possibility of severe thunderstorms on Thursday, with locally damaging winds reaching 65 mph.
“The threat of severe thunderstorm activity will extend from southeastern New England into New Jersey and northeastern Delaware, potentially leading to damaging wind gusts and flash flooding,” AccuWeather.com said.
The optimistic forecast for Friday and the weekend remained unchanged.
All three days are expected to be dry, sunny and increasingly warm. Temperatures will reach highs in the mid-80s on Friday before rising slightly each day over the next two days.
