Much of the lower 48 states are expected to experience a new round of persistent high temperatures that will last into the first week of August. The hottest temperatures are expected in central states, where the heat dome is expanding and intensifying.

More than 45 million people were under heat warnings in parts of 18 states on Tuesday. About 16 million more people in the Midwest and Mississippi Valley are under heat warnings. In these areas, the heat index – a measure of how hot the weather is, taking into account humidity – is expected to exceed 110 degrees by midweek.

By late in the working week, parts of the eastern and western United States could experience record warm afternoon highs and overnight lows.

The National Weather Service predicts that heat risks will be at least moderate to severe for much of the country next week. But in scattered areas of more than two dozen states, mainly in the central and southeastern United States, heat risks could reach top “extreme” levels.

“This multi-day heat wave will increase the risk not only to sensitive groups but also to the general public,” the weather service warned. Only the mountains and parts of the upper Midwest will escape it.

Check out how hot it is in the 12 locations below.
