Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., who is running for Senate, claims in a new TV ad that she opposes electric vehicle (EV) mandates, even though she has repeatedly voted in favor of them make. [emphasis, links added]

Slotkin claims in the new ad that “no one should tell us what to buy, and no one is going to enforce anything” when it comes to electric cars.

However, the Senate is hopeful that it has repeatedly voted to support the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) strict emissions standards. -This has been characterized as a de facto electric vehicle mandate- and the ability of regulatory states to decide what cars to offer to consumers.

“I live on a dirt road far from a charging station, so I don't have an electric car. No one should tell us what to buy, and no one is forcing us to do anything. But here's the thing: If a new generation is to be launched Cars, I wish this generation of cars were made in Michigan, not in China,” Slotkin said in the ad. “I agree with the message because the car you drive is your decision and not someone else's.”

Slotkin’s message in the ad contradicts her congressional voting record on electric vehicles.

September, Slotkin voted against the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution, which, if enacted by President Joe Biden, would have eliminated the EPA's emissions rules.

She also Vote against the Automotive Retail Sales Choice Act in December 2023;The bill would repeal the EPA's emissions rules and prohibit the agency from issuing similar regulations.

Specifically, according to the New York Times, manufacturers can comply with EPA emissions standards if 56% of new cars sold by 2032 are electric and 16% are hybrids

Additionally, Slotkin voted against the Vehicle Purchase Choice Act in September 2023.

The bill would significantly modify the Clean Air Act's exemption process, allowing the EPA to set emissions standards on behalf of California that are more stringent than federal limits, a dynamic that could have potential trickle-down effects for states that don't want to be affected by California. policy results.

As Election Day approaches, electric vehicles will become a major issue in Michigan politics because the state is the heart of the U.S. auto industry and home to thousands of autoworkers.

While UAW leadership has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, Many rank-and-file members are considering voting for former President Donald Trump amid concerns that the transition to electric vehicles could jeopardize their jobs.

Slotkin currently leads her opponent, former Republican Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, by three percentage points in the RealClearPolitics polling average.

Rogers slammed the ad in a post to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, saying Slotkin lied about her EV record.
