The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday intercepted hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals trying to cross into India at the international border in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

Fleeing Bangladeshi nationals claim they are “under attack” in their homeland.

BSF officials said that although Bengalis gathered at the border, they were unable to enter India due to the complete border seal.

“They were later brought back by the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB),” the official said.

The incident took place near Dakshin Berubari village in Japotala border outpost area.

The people involved came from five villages in Bangladesh's Panchagarh district, which borders Jalpaiguri.

One local resident reported that those gathered outside the barbed wire fence begged to be let in and shared their painful experiences. “But we were helpless. They told of their horrific experiences.

Bangladesh has become increasingly unstable after weeks of violent student-led protests over job quotas, leading Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country.

Bangladeshi President Mohammad Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on Tuesday and appointed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus to lead an interim government.
